In terms of design and features, it’s hard to criticise the 8700. Unfortunately when it comes to image quality, the talons can come out a bit. Not a lot, you understand, but a bit. At low ISO settings you’d be hard-pushed to find anything wrong with the images – colours are clear and realistic, contrast is good and everything is nice and sharp. However, once you start going up the ISO scale image noise makes itself known. It’s noticeable at ISO 200, and blindingly obvious at ISO 400, so bear this in mind. There is a Noise Reduction feature, which takes the sting away a little, but it’s still annoying. Another thing to watch out for is that there is sometimes a bit of a wait while the camera processes an image. This is made even worse if you try and take a couple of shots in quick succession, and can soon get tiresome.

This is by no means a bad camera – in fact its performance in Macro mode was outstanding, but you shouldn’t let its eight megapixels or highest resolution setting of 3,264 x 2,448 sway you. These seductive numbers are hampered by the noise problem and lag in processing time. If you’ve got the money and demand the best, have a look at Nikon’s higher end models, such as the D70 or D100. But if you’re an amateur who has grown out of their digital compact and wants something that will bridge the gap between consumer and SLR, the 8700 could be just the thing.

The 8700 has retained the 8x Nikkor 8.9-71.2mm ED lens from its predecessor – the COOLPIX 5700. This gives a zoom range equivalent to a 35-280mm lens on a 35mm camera. This takes ten shots in quick succession and automatically selects the best one. Although you won’t use this all the time, it’s invaluable if you’re taking a tricky shot – such as handholding the camera on long exposures. Another nice touch is the Time Lapse option, which allows you to take a photo at set intervals (the interval settings range from 30 seconds to one hour). The Quick Review button is also pretty tasty because it produces a thumbnail of the last shot you took while you’re in Record mode.
