Blast From The Past

Bandai Pippin @World

Back in the mid-1990s Japanese toy manufacturer, Bandai, took great interest in Apple’s Power Mac technology. Bandai wanted to use the Power Mac in a new gaming console it wanted to develop. Apple had just begun licensing the Mac OS and jumped at the chance. The end result was the Pippin. Styled as the ultimate TV appliance and launched in 1996, the Pippin offered Web connectivity via a TV set and console gaming. Going head-to-head with Nintendo, Sega and Sony at a more expensive price point was always going to be a major problem and, according to Owen Linzmayer in Apple Confidential 2.0, only 42,000 were ever sold.
